CBD Serves a Multi-Purpose Role—-and Why That’s Important

“Opiates kill over 30,000 Americans a year, alcohol kills over 80,000 a year. And marijuana, as best we know, probably kills less than 50 people a year,” Dr. Orrin Devinsky of NYU Langone Medical Center said, expressed her frustrations over the inefficient testing of cannabis.

Recreational marijuana has been legalized in nine states including Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, Oregon, and Vermont, Washington, and Washington, D.C, but the topic of cannabis still incites some uncertainty and negativity due to its illegal status on the federal level.

Despite some resounding success on cannabis testing, many are still wary of any involvement or consideration of its medicinal properties. However, things are changing as corporations as well as athletes and celebrities continue to support and provide grounds for removing negative connotations on using cannabis as a source of treatment or medication.

This is key as cannabidiol (CBD) and medicinal cannabis play yet another important role: providing a source of non-addictive pain relief.

CBD as a Pharmaceutical Medicine

CBD products are highly popular with its consumer base, as CBD has been linked to several health benefits such as treating epilepsy and seizures. In an NPR article, New York University Langone Medical Center neurologist Dr. Orrin Devinsky stated that nine percent of all patients and 13 percent of those with Dravet Syndrome epilepsy were seizure-free after a CBD experiment was conducted on 313 children from several epilepsy centers based in the US.

In an experiment on the effects of London based GW Pharmaceuticals produced Epidiolex on treating seizures, 61 participants were given the CBD oil while 59 received a placebo in a double-blind study. Double-blind studies are performed on a control and experimental group, with neither researchers or participants having any knowledge of whether they are receiving a placebo or the treatment in question. This approach is effective in several ways, as it minimizes any potential bias or placebo effect, producing more impactful data as a result.

The testing produced positive results: The experiment group’s monthly seizure frequency dropped by 39% and 13% for the control group. Epidiolex is currently under review by the FDA for official approval and commercialization.

Pain Relief for Athletes

Former NBA player Jay Williams discussed the prevalent amount of NBA players that relied on Percocet, an opioid providing pain relief to get through games. Percocet contains oxycodone and acetaminophen and is known to be addictive. Williams stated, "I know so many athletes that play on Percocet. Have you ever taken Percocet by the way? It makes you way more groggy than rubbing cannabis oil into your skin."

Jay Williams was a former NBA star that was highly touted to be one of the top players in the league until a motorcycle accident nearly claimed his life. Following the crash, he became addicted to opiates as a source of pain relief He described the experience on The Player’s Tribune, a publication that features articles written exclusively by professional athletes.

Williams wrote, “Pain is part of sports, too. Always has been, and always will be. Athletes put their bodies on the line day in and day out, and they will always be looking for ways to get back out on the court or field.” Addiction to pain medication such as opiates is a huge issue that many athletes struggle with, as they entire livelihood depends on their ability to perform at all costs.

Uphill Battle

District Attorney Jeff Sessions is known for his hardline stance against cannabis use, and the made it clear as he instructed prosecutors to go after cannabis cases full force. Ironically, this has backfired on him a few ways, particularly with Vermont Governor Phil Scott’s endorsement, making it the latest state to allow recreational cannabis use.

The World Health Organization has also ruled that CBD shouldn’t be classified as a controlled substance, citing its increasingly documented medicinal properties and exempt from any risk of becoming an addictive consumption or health complications. As CBD doesn’t contain any THC, this was also an important element in the final ruling as CBD doesn’t lead to physiological alterations.

Opposition to cannabis for medicinal purposes is still prevalent, but as proof of its effectiveness increases and media exposure continues to get entrenched by its increasing usage, the public eye is starting to take notice.
