How to Beat the Heat

Summer is a welcome break from the cold weather and a time for people to go out and enjoy the sun. A lot of people tend to plan their getaways during this period. But being outdoors all the time does come with its consequences. Direct and prolonged exposure to sunlight can be harmful to your skin and your health.

  1.    Wear Sunscreen

With the sun at full force during summer, the last thing we want is a sunburn. The sun emits harmful UV rays that might even cause skin cancer. Sunburns when severe are found to cause dehydration due to rise in temperature, which leads to diarrhoea. It is important to wear sunscreen without fail.

  1.    Stay Hydrated

This sounds like the most obvious thing to do, but we often forget it. In summer, we tend to sweat a lot, and the intense heat makes us dehydrated very quickly. So, it is imperative to have a bottle of water on you at all times. Drinking lots of fluids and other beverages like lemonade, iced tea, green tea [though not with boiling water], etc. can help. You can also indulge in juicy fruits such as oranges, tomatoes and watermelons.

  1.    Have Appropriate Attire

Wearing light coloured clothes is preferred over dark colours as the dark colours often absorb light and heat from the sun and heat you up. Loose clothes will be airier and will give you more circulation. The last thing you want in the hot summer is to feel uncomfortable in tight clothes. Avoid choosing heavy or synthetic fabrics. Lightweight fabrics such as cotton are ideal as they are very comfortable and absorb sweat quite readily.

Summer is the time when you really should make a diet plan and stick to it. It is necessary to have a lot of vitamins and minerals in your body to stay healthy during the heat. Celery can help detoxify your body. Raspberries and blackberries are excellent sources of fibres. Apples and pears also help to increase the fibre intake. Its peel also has high nutritional value. You might find yourself in a situation where you’re enjoying a couple of drinks with your friends and family, but it is advised not to go overboard with it. Especially if you’re outside under direct sunlight, it is better if we stay away from too many alcoholic beverages. Alcohol dehydrates you and causes you to sweat a lot. It is essential to drink water as you consume alcohol so that you don’t exhaust yourself.
